Boat Trip is a free route planner for boats. We collect as little personal data as we can, we don't show ads and we don't use trackers or analytics. This page explains what we do keep, why, and what you can do about it.
Who is responsible
Boat Trip (boattripplanner.com) is responsible for your data. For any question about it, or to use your rights, write to info@boattripplanner.com.
What we collect
- Your account, if you create one: name, email address, password (stored only as a secure hash, never in readable form), boat settings, home port, saved routes and favourite spots.
- Security log: when the site is opened and when someone registers, signs in, fails to sign in or signs out, we record the time, IP address, browser and device type, and an approximate location (city and country) worked out from the IP address on our own server.
- Session: while you are signed in, our server keeps a session record so you stay signed in.
Routes you plan without an account are not stored.
Why, and on what legal basis
- Account data is needed to provide the service you asked for: saving routes and settings (GDPR art. 6(1)(b)).
- The security log protects accounts and the site against abuse, such as password guessing (our legitimate interest, GDPR art. 6(1)(f)).
We never sell your data or use it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Account data: until you ask us to delete your account.
- Security log: 90 days, then deleted automatically.
- Sessions: until you sign out, or after 30 days without use.
Cookies
Boat Trip uses one cookie, __Host-boattrip. It keeps you signed in and protects forms against forged requests. It is strictly necessary for the site to work, so under EU rules it does not need your consent, and there is no cookie banner. It expires when you sign out or after 30 days without use.
There are no advertising, analytics or third-party cookies, and nothing else is stored in your browser.
Services your browser contacts
To show the chart and the forecast, your browser loads data directly from these services. Like any website, they receive your IP address and the area of the map or the position you are looking at:
- OpenStreetMap (map and place search) and OpenSeaMap (sea marks)
- Esri / ArcGIS Online (satellite view, only when you switch it on; United States)
- EMODnet Bathymetry (depth lines)
- Open-Meteo (wind and wave forecast)
- RainViewer (rain radar)
Cloud maps (OpenWeatherMap) and waypoint depths (EMODnet) are fetched by our server, so those services do not see your IP address.
If you share a route with a link, anyone who has the link can see that route and your first name.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, or object to how we use it, by writing to info@boattripplanner.com. You also have the right to complain to a data protection authority; in Italy this is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali.
Changes
If this notice changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
